Alpha Translucency

Alpha translucency uses the alpha channel of a texturemap?s bitmap file to set a high value for transparency of the image. A value between 0 and 1 is stored in an alpha channel. 0 is fully transparent, 1 is fully solid. By setting a value very close to 1, the result is not transparency, but translucency.

Because the value is not 1, occlusion culling will not occur on a properly rendered virtual environment. However, the level of transparency is not enough to be noticed, unless there is backlighting, in which case the transparency is enough to let light through, as well as the absence of light caused by objects behind the texturemap. Hence, translucency.
