Bone Weighting

Bone weighting is the process of applying a weight to the bones used in model animation, such that they - and by extension any part of a model that is attached to them - actually have weight in the virtual environment. This then has the knock on effect as interfacing the physics engine with avatar animations. Movement of the arm, for example, shifts the distribution of weight in the avatar, and the physics engine, to compensate adjusts the posture. Additionally, if the system is smart enough to detect this, the shoulders will deform as the weight shifts.

The net result is the illusion of life, as the avatar behaves like an organic being.
