Cognitive Artificial Intelligence

A cognitive artificial intelligence or cognitive AI is the driving mind behind a cognitive robot. It is an artificial intelligence embodied in either a physical (robotic) or virtual (avatar) body which while not necessary sentient, is sapient. In other words, it has the ability to process its own input and make its own logical or rational judgements based on that input.

The embodiment is mandatory to create a cognitive AI, as it has to be aware of its own body, and the sensory pathways coming from that body, as it makes sense of the world it is presented with.

Cognitive AI does exist today. Such AIs are usually based on neural networks. However the neural net is only the beginning. Setting up sensory interfaces with the outside world is also an integral part of their make-up, at the highest levels.

New approaches to artificial intelligence spring from the idea that intelligence emerges as much from cells, bodies, and societies as it does from evolution, development, and learning. Traditionally, artificial intelligence has been concerned with reproducing the abilities of human brains; newer approaches take inspiration from a wider range of biological structures that that are capable of autonomous self-organisation.

Mapping Intelligence to the Brain
Intelligence. We understand the concept, and the meaning of this word, but where in the brain, precisely, is intelligence actually located? Until recently, we did not really, have a clue. Now, using perhaps the most common sense approach possible, from neuroscientists at the California Institute of Technology have mapped the cognitive zones of the human brain.

Franklin's tour of contemporary thought on human, animal, and artificial minds introduces creative theories, models, and prototypes of artificial intelligence. After citing the scoffers' arguments regarding the improbability of fashioning artificial minds, Franklin examines some systems that do, in fact, exhibit aspects of intelligence.

Artificial General Intelligence or AGI is the holy grail of AI research. Instead of expert systems, and image recognition, it refers to common-sense know-how ? general intelligence most humans have when in unfamiliar situations. In other words, the ability of an AI to think and reason as a sentient being, even when confronted by unfamiliar data.

CALO, or Cognitive Assistant that Learns and Organizes is a DARPA artificial intelligence project with an extremely ambitious scope. Even the anagram, CALO is derived from the Latin word "calonis," which means "soldier?s servant."

This robot girl - gynoid - is used as a demonstration model by the film "AI: Artificial Intelligence", to show several aspects of their take on robot behaviour and construction. In this still, the gynoid's face is sliding apart for maintenance. This is not particularly realistic, for several reasons.
