Cognitive Robotics

Cognitive robotics is essentially the study of making cognitive AI. A long way short of a machine consciousness, a cognitive AI embodies a physical robot or virtual avatar (which is then termed a cognitive robot) as a sapient entity.

In other words it is the study of creating AI which although not truly sentient, is capable of processing sensory data from its body whether that body is physical or virtual, and make its own logical or rational judgements based on that input.

Cognitive robots do exist today. They are often used in research situations: robots that have not been programmed by a human with how to deal with every possible situation they may face, but instead feel their way through with trial, error, and memory.

Probabilistic robotics is a new and growing area in robotics, concerned with perception and control in the face of uncertainty. Building on the field of mathematical statistics, probabilistic robotics endows robots with a new level of robustness in real-world situations.

Mind as Machine: A History of Cognitive Science comes as a two volume set, of 1631 pages between them. They are the first attempt at chronicling the entire 50-year history of the field, and showing how the paths are laid for future research. Both books are invaluable for this reason, as well as providing very intriguing and useful reading for anyone interested in creating powerful AI, or interfacing their brain with a computer, or even seeing where others have trod before.

Galatea and Modern Robotics: The Allusion
At first glance, it would not seem that an ancient Grecian myth would have anything to do with modern robotics. Yet, whilst still not commonplace, the allusion to Galatea is slowly gaining popularity as a phrase used to reference modern robots and android/gynoids. Certainly as we move ever-closer to bridging the uncanny valley, this allusion makes ever more sense.
