Learning By Imitation

Learning by imitation is one of the most ubiquitous forms of learning in nature, and a task undertaken by the young of every known higher species. Take note of what their parents do, what their peers do, and copy it. So it follows almost naturally that one of the main paradigms for teaching a cognitive AI how to behave would be exactly the same.

Learning by imitation is a major branch of AI development, in which the embodied artificial intelligence watches other beings and how they behave, either in a physical or virtual environment, solely through the medium of the sensor pathways ? senses ? given to it. It then tries to imitate that behaviour. Typically there is a reward/punishment feedback loop set up outside the AI?s control, to encourage good behaviour and discourage bad. The exact same system as used for a small child.

Michael Heim, the author of this book, describes modern 'VR' as a pale imitation of real VR. On this point, he is of course, all too correct. He then goes on to state that the real thing is fast approaching. We'll soon be able to totally immerse ourselves in detail-rich, highly interactive artificial worlds....

Muds as Social Learning Environments
A ten year old article talking about the potential for virtual environments for learning, long before serious games even came along.

Video games have become both big business and a technological focal point for new forms of learning. Today games are not just played; players engage in game design, write fan fiction, and organise themselves into collaborative learning communities. In these communities players acquire 21st century skills in technology, but, in the best of these communities, they hone these technical skills and strengthen emotional and social intelligence.
