Teledildonics, the term means literally as it seems to: Sex by remote operation. The two (or three, or four...) parties being physially separated by anything from a few feet, to thousands of miles, still able to kiss, hug, arouse and satiate one another despite that.
Teledildonics goes further than cybersex, offering real, definite physical interaction, no danger of pregnancy, no diseases to transfer, and you can always say no, and turn them off, even mid-thrust.
Many believe this to be the 'killer application' for mainstream VR.
Sensors, the devices that allow us to sense the environment around us, are responsible for all the input we recieve. Likewise, hardware offers sensors, to augment, or replace our usual physical ones, and vastly improve the experience of the virtual.
Love at the Prompt
A somewhat dated article now, still relevant, if using outdated examples, of the power of alternate, digital lives over the physical one.
Sex in The Machine
Sex within simulated environements. Pleasurable, stimulating, orgasmic. Yet no danger of diseases, or pregnancy. Some fear this will lead to a decline in world population. Might it instead, lead to a new stage in evolution?
An interoductionary overview of the field of teledildonics, or remote-operated sex, covering everything from theory, to current applications, to future possibilities, and ideas for developers.
Developed initially for the 2008 'plug and play' teledildonics conference hosted by Bauhaus university in Germany, on 11th till 13th July 2008, the OI/OO seems oddly named until you realise what it is: A pair of adapters designed for the Wii-mote of the Nintendo Wii, with personal pleasure very much in mind.
The Sinulator was the first of a new wave of teledildonics devices to be developed in 2004-2005. Essentially a remote-controlled vibrator with a USB socket on the end of a long cable, the Sinulator offers no touching, no hugging, caressing, or intimacy, but offers the first real, thou primative being with your partner through VR.
A teledildonics interface, the thrillhammer materialised shortly after the sinulator. It sort of resembles the bastard child of a flogiston chair, a sinulator, and a rumble machine. The original was a sort of cross-pairing between a dentists' chair and a gynaecological exam table, thankfully they have come a long way since then.
Nanotech and the Brain
Nanotechnology is impacting on Virtual Reality interfaces in the form of brain mats, and interfaces between wetware, and hardware.
If it becomes possible to display a complete recording of someone's present sensations via neuralprothesis as a file for another to experience, then it will likely also be possible to store these experiences, for replay later...
Being There, Now...
Through neural interfaces, it will be ultimately bepossible to record all of a person's senses about the area they are in. That leads to 'being somewhere else, now' in which a user can experience life at a beautiful locale, or historic discovery through the experiences of another - without going there themselves.
Real Sex, Virtual Worlds
Online sex has always been about real connection in a virtual environment. This article looks in depth at the concept, as wel las the concept of MMOEGs - Massively Multiplayer Online Erotic Games - that have risen over the past year, and flourished.
A prosthetic device, implanted the lumbar region at the back of the spine, that functions, essentially, as an orgasm control circuit, and bypass route for sexual stimulation without actual physical sex.
A mis-fire in the teledildonics industry, this early attempt at sexual stimulation in VR fell short after it was discovered it had a minor side effect - bodily secretions caused a lethal electrical discharge.

7 Reasons Your Boss Should Send You to Sex Conferences
A teledildonics article, work-safe if necessary, ontlining seven reasons sex conferences are a very very good idea if you are planning an erotic virtual world, hardware or looking to create a killer application that people will truly desire to use.
Beyond Teledildonics: Teleamore
Teledildonics has been an up and coming technology for some time, and one which has never truly up and come. Now, a new technology, that of teleamore, is being born out of it.

Large Image Display: Chrysalis: Virtual Sexual Stimulation: Part 2
Part two of a two-part series taking a look at virtual sex devices as portrayed in the 2007 French film Chrysalis, and comparing them to what we know of real-world counterparts. This part takes a look at the more sophisticated full sensory immersion devices, and how increased sensory presence may actually greatly reduce the risks exposed in part one.
Virtual girl is firmly placed for all time, in the category of camp, cheesy, low budget trash, attempting to pass itself off as VR. It?s a film with a schizophrenic direction. Half the time it is trying oh so hard, so desperately hard to be a sci-fi film about VR technology gone wrong. The other half of the time, it is trying to be soft core pornography. Thus, it fails miserably at both.

Name any topic imaginable, and its near certain that someone, somewhere, has a sexual fetish involving it. This is a definite cause of conflict, when one person's fetish impinges upon another person's life. One facet of VR, is that it allows such interests to be performed without affecting any physical life.
