Visual Searching

Visual Searching is an automatic object identification method whereby the source device uses a camera or sometimes two cameras for depth perception, to scan a physical location to find a particular object or particular feature at that location.

Conceivably it could also be used just as efficiently in a virtual environment. However there are typically more efficient ways of locating an object in a virtual space than are available in a physical one.

Visual Searching relies on some of the same core technologies that augmented reality does. It uses machine vision, run from a neural network so it can detect approximate matches rather than just being limited to perfect fits. Quite often something that bears a resemblance to an internal 3D virtual environment is constructed, so as to work out what objects would look like from different angles to determine if an object actually matches. Results are usually returned that overcome a probability threshold, similar to the way human vision operates.

Unlike AR, Visual Searching is usually not a real-time. When a search is requested, a search is performed, and may take several seconds depending on the available computing power.
